The theme continues in the rear, with good levels of space for passengers, but the boot is what makes this car. This is quite simply the most thoroughly resolved and well thought out estate you can buy. Load space is vast, and full of neat little hooks, straps and levers that work perfectly, and is ideal for moving anything from the dog to the wardrobe effortlessly.

The Volvo XC70 has easily lived up to the companies hard won reputation in this respect, and the car feels endowed with materials and switchgear that are beautifully engineered with a hewn from solid quality, there is a purposeful ruggedness in all the controls, extending into the load bay which demonstrates that nothing is there for show, and everything giving the impression they will easily last a lifetime of abuse.

2.4 D5 Diesel

The D5 is the popular 5 cylinder diesel motor seen across the whole of the range. In the XC70 it's only available in the more powerful of its 2 forms - the D5 version, giving 185 bhp. It has plenty of grunt, with the mid range torque being especially strong, making motorway overtaking a doddle. 0-60 times are around 9.3 seconds, with a top speed of 130 mph. fuel economy is at the 37.7 mpg mark on a combined run. Overall the D5 engine does a great job, it's a little coarse if you really rev it, but it's easily the most popular choice in the range. It can be had with either than manual or the geartronic auto box.

3.2 Petrol

The XC70 3.2 litre petrol engine is a beautifully refined engine that is popular wherever diesel isn't, so America mainly. It is smooth and free revving, hampered slightly by the geartronic automatic transmission, but otherwise very pleasant to use. 0-60 times of 8.6 seconds better the diesel, and it is only really the fuel consumption of 24.8 mpg combined with a high C02 figure that means it plays second fiddle to the diesel here in the UK.
