Performance

This latest incarnation of the Volvo S80 has been given a selection of petrol engines, from a 2.5 litre turbo, to a 3.2 inline 6 cylinder and a range topping 4.4 V8. all are smooth, while the new 3.2 has a rather sporty character, which seems slightly at odds what is otherwise a superbly refined car. More popular will be the 2.0D, 2.4 D and D5 engines, found elsewhere in the range that are quiet and frugal, yet pack a decent midrange punch.

Ride & Handling

In what seems to be a trend, this new Volvo S80 has a crisper setup to its suspension than the previous model, meaning the ride is a little firmer, but resists body roll well, and yet still manages to give a good account of itself on motorways. SE Sport trim gets the new ‘Active Four-C’ chassis which will automatically adjust the dampers to the type of road you are on, and works well.

Reliability

Volvo Cars have an enviable reputation when it comes to reliability, and whilst this new S80 hasn’t bee around long enough for any particular faults to be recorded, it is unlikely that many will surface, as the car feels solidly constructed, and the interior materials and surfaces are all of high grade. Proven mechanicals and engines that feature in the rest of the range are a good sign, and Volvos record on safety is second to none.

Specifications

Spec levels are good for a car in this class, full leather, dual climate control, cruise, CD etc are all standard, whilst SE Lux levels bring Heated Softgrain leather seats, and sport brings aluminium trim and a stylish set of larger alloys. Top of the range Exec models get Sat Nav and all the toys, but aren’t cheap.

Living with the Car

The Volvo S80 is the new flagship of the range, and feels well appointed to match its status. It is physically a large car, and that is reflected in the generous head and legroom both the front and rear passengers are gifted. Seats are supportive and very comfortable, and the driving position is ideal for long journeys. The controls are neat with large robust buttons, and as expected, laid out ergonomically.

Summary

In a competitive class, the Volvo S80 provides an admirable alternative to the German offerings, with all of the charm, build quality and practicality, and none of the arrogance. The car is beautifully engineered, well equipped, and at a price that will undercut its main rivals by some margin, overall a very complete car.
