The New Volvo C70 is a refined cruiser that feels beautifully built, and expensively crafted. The addition of the elegant folding hardtop has given a new dimension in practicality to this versatile car. It looks as good with the roof up as down, and is sure to attract many admirers. Sensibly priced and well specified, this is a wonderful package that will meet your needs no matter what the vagaries of the British weather have in store.

With the C70's folding roof up, you’d be forgiven for thinking you were in a traditional coupe, such is the level of refinement. Roof down is equally good, with the large front screen doing an excellent job of deflecting the majority of the wind, keeping the passengers isolated from the majority of any buffeting and noise levels are surprisingly low. Comfort is excellent, with the fantastic front seats, and even rear legroom is good for a convertible. Boot space is class leading with the roof up, although lowering the roof does reduce this a great deal. The folding hardtop gives the car an inherent rigidity that you can feel roof up or down, and that means a level of handling not seen in previous generation models, with stiff suspension and direct, if a little light, steering, and little body roll. The larger alloys of the sport variant increase cornering grip significantly, but combined with the stiffer suspension can lead to a slightly firmer ride.

A traditional Volvo trait, the car is beautifully built and features high quality materials and soft feel surfaces throughout, along with the Bang & Olufsen style floating centre console. The hard top operates elegantly, and will no doubt be trouble free just like the rest of the car. Mechanicals are well proven along with engines which feature across the range, so along with the companies reputation for safety, expect years of trouble free motoring.

Specification

The 2.0 Diesel is has only recently been brought into the C70 range, to give a more fuel efficient version. The 2.0 diesel is also available with the excellent 'powershift' dual clutch automatic gearbox, which is a big step forward over the traditional geartronic box. Despite being down on power compared to other models, the 2.0 does a good job of hurrying the car along, mainly due to its mid range surge of torque, which i good enough to get from 0 to 60 in 11 seconds, and on to 127 mph. fuel economy is the best of the range at 46.3 mpg on average.

The D5 is the popular 5 cylinder diesel motor seen across the whole of the range, and only the more powerful 185 bhp D5 version is available. It is good for a 0-60 of 9 seconds and a top speed of 140 mph, while returning a commendable 42.8 mpg. The D5 diesel unit has been a stalwart of the Volvo range for some time, and it is a strong motor, but can get a little vocal when revved hard from cold.

The 2.4i is the smallest petrol motor available in the range, and had previously seen service in the V70 and S60 models. It's a 5 cylinder in-line unit with 170 bhp, in a fairly lazy state of tune, meaning it prefers to be driven along on the torque much like a diesel rather than being pushed hard, but it's good for a 0-60 time of 9.1 seconds and a top speed of 137 mph when you push it.

The C70 T5 is the top of the range 5 cylinder 2.5 litre turbocharged engine that car shares with the fire breathing Focus ST. it's good for 230 bhp, a top speed of 150 mph and a 0-60 of 7.6 seconds. It is by far the fastest model with more than enough power for a car with a chassis set up as a boulevard cruiser rather than a racer. fuel consumption will suffer if you push it, with an average of 31 mpg but dropping fast when you really put your foot down.

Volvo C70 ES

The C70 has 4 levels of standard spec: the entry level ES only available on the 2.0 diesel and 2.4 petrol, and the SE, SE Lux, and Sport. The ES Spec gives you all the usual Volvo safety features and equipment, and also 16" alloy wheels, front fog lights, climate control, trip computer, cruise control, keyless drive, front centre armrest, leather steering wheel with audio controls, CD player with 8 speakers an Aux-In socket for your MP3 player, and all "premium" cars now come with Volvo's RTI satellite navigation system as standard.

Volvo C70 SE

The SE is the next level up from the S, and for your extra money you get a larger set of 17" alloy wheels, power folding door mirrors, rain sensing wipers, water repellent side windows, auto dimming rear view mirror with compass, electric drivers seat with memory positions, nordic light oak wood veneer, 6 CD changer and leather seats.

Volvo C70 SE Lux

The SE Lux specification is as the name suggests the luxury spec, on top of the SE it gives you a set of larger 18" alloy wheels, cargo net, ski bag, electric driver and passenger seats, the dynaudio premium sound system with twelve speakers and a sub woofer.
