Road Test Report – Freelander 2

Performance Freelander 2

The new Freelander 2 range has a choice of 2 engines, an auto only 3.2 litre petrol unit with 230bhp, and a punchy 2.2 litre, 158bhp turbodiesel. Only the 6 speed manual gearboxes are available from launch on the diesel, with an auto option coming in April 2007. The diesel will be the choice of most buyers, being the much more frugal option, and the power characteristics most suited to the car.

Ride & Handling Freelander 2

The Freelander 2 has matured into a much more refined cruiser, well capable of matching the rest in the class. It can comfortably smooth over even the lumpiest roads, and is well beyond the competition should you decide to venture off road. All but the base model S get the Terrain Response system, allowing progress over any surface, should it venture further than the supermarket car park. On road handling is crisp, with a little body roll, and steering is accurate, if a little light.

Reliability Freelander 2

Land Rover is making leaps and bounds on the reliability front, with the new model being built in the same Halewood factory as the Jaguar X-Type, which has won the top award for quality of any plant in Europe, beating all the German competition. The model hasn’t been out long enough to spot any particular faults, but improvements should be vast compared to the old model.

Specifications Freelander 2

Making the most of the ‘Range Rover Sport’ family looks, the new Freelander 2 has moved several steps upmarket over the last model. There is now no three door, soft top or commercial version, and no smaller 1.6 or 1.8 petrol. The first popular spec is the GS, with climate, 17” alloys, cruise, auto headlights & wipers, trip computer, and reverse park aid, as the entry S model is very basic. The XS adds half leather seats and bluetooth, the SE comes with a sunroof, 6 CD and sat nav, and the top spec HSE comes with full leather, and is fully loaded, if expensive.

Living with the Car Freelander 2

The commanding driving position gives a great view of the road, and the seats have a huge amount of adjustment. Boot space is ok, if not best in class, and the back seats will fold flat. Cabin quality is very upmarket, with high quality fixtures and fittings, again strongly reminiscent of its bigger brother, the Range Rover Sport.

Summary Freelander 2

A massive leap forward from Land Rover, the new Freelander 2 is a tremendously versatile machine, both on and off road, and has made big strides in both style and quality. No longer a cheap alternative to cars such as the Toyota Rav 4 or Nissan X-Trail, it now competes and wins against its key luxury rival, the BMW X3, and has instantly become the must-have junior off roader. The new Freelander 2 goes back to the top of the class.
