Road Test Report – Land Rover Discovery
Performance There’s a choice of 2 powerplants, both based on Jaguar engines – a 4.4 V8 petrol version, and a 2.7 V6 turbocharged diesel. The petrol engine has had such a small take up that it has been recently made special order only, highlighting the fact that European buyers now prefer diesels in their off-roaders, which is confirmed at resale time, with much stronger residual values. The engine is smooth and refined, but the high kerbweight does hamper acceleration and fuel economy. |
Ride & Handling For a car with such serious off road pretentions, the Discovery is incredibly good, with a fine, comfortable ride, light, accurate steering, and reduced body roll. As a 4x4, the Discovery is peerless in the mud, a seperate low speed box, Hill Descent Control, Terrain Response system, every electronic aid imaginable, and is quite simply one of the most talented off-roaders you can buy. |
Reliability Land Rover is making leaps and bounds on the reliability front, and a quick look in the cabin confirms the standards of materials being used are of high quality, and unrecognisable from the old Discovery. Build quality looks tough enough to withstand whatever terrain you choose to throw the car at, although earlier models haven’t been entirely trouble free. |
Specifications The Base Spec is cheap, but comes with the basic coils springs, and lacks the some of the off road toys, all other cars get 7 seats, air suspension, and the Terrain Response system. SE models up get leather and sat nav, and improved stereos, but despite starting at the £27,000, higher spec versions can end up easily over the £40,000 mark, but hold their values well. |
Living with the Car The commanding driving position gives a great view of the road, and the seats have a huge amount of adjustment. Boot space is good, but restricted if you use all 7 seats, and has a slit tailgate for use as a platform or table. The interior is a great combination of practicality and luxury, so you feel pampered, yet still ok to sit in with your muddy boots on. |
Summary The countryside favourite, the versatile Land Rover Discovery handles on and off road with consummate ease. Comfortable and luxurious enough to cruise effortlessly on the motorways, yet capable of ploughing up a mountain should you need to. Not cheap, especially the higher spec models, but solid residuals and good build make a strong overall ownership proposition, as demonstrated by the What Car ‘Car of the year award 2005’. |
