New Audi A6

The New Audi A6 has just been launched, and what seems like a mild face lift hides a raft of modifications under the skin, which improve the car in every aspect. The suspension allows the A6 to glide over bumps it would previously have crashed over, while feeling much more agile in the bends. Refinement is great on motorways, and it is incredibly hushed even at higher speeds. Build quality is as usual excellent, with the interior being a great place to spend time, the materials are true luxury level, and everything is well laid out and intuitive to use. Space in the rear of the car is almost at limousine levels with great levels of head and leg room.

Audi A6 2.0 TFSI

The Audi A6 2.0 TFSI runs with a powerful 2.0 turbocharged 170 bhp engine developed from the unit found across the range and re tuned for this application. It is a strong motor that likes being revved, and gives a 0-60 time of 8.2 seconds, and on to a top speed of 142 mph. Fuel economy doesn’t suffer unless you are really pushing it, with an official average figure of 37.7 mpg.

Audi A6 2.0 TDI 170 Diesel

The Audi A6 2.0 TDI 170 diesel is the mainstay of the range and easily the biggest seller. It comes with, you’ve guessed it – 170 bhp, which does a good job of hauling around a car the size of this, and gives a solid push of mid range acceleration, with a 0-60 of 8.9 seconds and a top speed of 140 mph, whilst returning a very respectable 49.6 mpg fuel economy. It is available as a manual or multitronic automatic version, in front wheel drive only.

Audi A6 2.0 TDIe

The Audi A6 2.0 TDIe diesel is the ‘green’ economy version of the A6, with the engine tuned to give 136 bhp. The cars gearing and tyres are both also modified to provide the lowest fuel consumption and also lowest CO2 figures in the A6 range, with fuel economy at 53.3 mpg and CO2 at a very respectable 139 g/km. Performance suffers a little over the 170 version, but the 136 bhp has just enough go for this car. The TDIe versions are mainly manual, also available in the multitronic automatic but due to the extra drag of the auto box, both economy and CO2 suffer significantly, so Audi has removed the “e” from the description on the multitronic models.

Audi A6 2.7 TDI

The Audi A6 2.7 TDI diesel is a 190 bhp engine with a lazy torque curve ideal for cruising without needing to rev the car, which is good as the diesel can become a little coarse when revved hard. It gives a 0-60 time of 7.9 seconds and a top speed of 144 mph while returning 45.6 mpg average fuel economy on the manual. It’s available in several gearbox formats, there is a manual version, the multitronic CVT auto version, and if you select the Quattro drive train rather than front wheel drive, the Tiptronic conventional torque converter auto.

Audi A6 2.8 FSI

The Audi A6 2.8 FSI engine is the petrol equivalent of the 2.7 diesel – the unit has been in the Audi range for a while, it is relaxed, not keen on too many revs, and best wafting the car along on the mid range power rather than being rung out – see the new 3.0 TFSI for that.. It has 220 bhp, a 0-60 time of 7.3 seconds, and a top speed of 149 mph, meaning it’s no slouch. Fuel economy isn’t a strong point at 33.6 mpg, and the 2.8 is only available in automatic, either the multitronic CVT auto, or if you want quattro, the tiptronic box.

Audi A6 3.0 TDI

The Audi A6 3.0 TDI diesel gives real performance in the new A6 with 240 bhp, 0-60 in 6.6 seconds and has a top speed limited to 155 mph, all while giving 42.2 mpg fuel economy. It’s not a cheap car but does come with the Quattro 4 wheel drive system as standard, and can be had in either manual or the Tiptronic Automatic gearbox.

Audi A6 3.0

The Audi A6 3.0 TFSI Petrol would be the top performance version in most ranges, with the 3.0 TFSI turbo petrol engine tuned to give 290 bhp, it lives to rev and sounds great. It’s only available with Quattro 4 wheel drive and as a Tiptronic auto, and has a 0-60 of 5.9 seconds and is again limited to 155 mph. Fuel economy isn’t the strongest point at 30.1 mpg, and unless you really don’t like diesel, then the 3.0 TDI is the better option for the UK market, and will have stronger resale values.

Audi A6 Specification

The Audi A6 comes as you would expect with a decent level of standard equipment, entry models getting: 17” alloy wheels, CD player, electronic park brake, electric windows, isofix child seat mounts, automatic headlights, rain sensing wipers, remote locking with alarm immobiliser, split folding rear seats, aluminium dash, dual zone climate control, and a set of carpet mats. The entry spec is only available on the 2.0 litre petrol and diesel engine sizes.

Audi A6 SE

The Audi A6 SE is the mid range trim, and gets: bluetooth mobile phone preparation, auto dimming rear view mirror, and Milano leather upholstery. The SE spec costs an extra £1300 over standard, whilst the larger engine sizes start at the SE spec.

Audi A6 S Line

The Audi A6 S Line trim is an extra £1300 more than the SE trim, and is the sportiest version, giving you 18” alloys, sports suspension, front leather sports seats, leather multifunction steering wheel, matt brushed aluminium fascia, xenon headlights with LED daytime running lights, and the S Line styling pack with a front and rear bumper in a sports design.

Audi A6 Avant

The Audi A6 Avant (or A6 Estate to you and me) has been the top selling estate in the larger executive class for a ling time. Audi has a great reputation for its estates, and deservedly so. Space in the boot is cavernous, particularly with the rear seat folded, with enough room for a wardrobe if need be. Dependant on the model, it costs around £1500 more for the A6 Avant version, but in all other respects the specification matches the saloon, and performance and fuel consumption are both very close to saloon levels.

Audi S6

The Audi S6 is the second top of the rang, before you consider the storming RS6 version – so good it gets its own page on Orangewheels. The S6 has a monster 5.2 V10 FSI engine with 435 bhp, enough to get from 0-60 in 5.2 seconds. spec on the S6 is increased, and as standard you get: 19” alloys, full size spare, 6 disc CD, bluetooth phone prep, HDD satellite navigation, carbon fibre inlay on the dash, aluminium finish wing mirrors, LED driving lights in the front bumper, a specially tuned sports chassis with uprated suspension, leather alcantara electric sports seats, and a special bodykit.
